Iceland with Volcano Expert Rikke Pedersen - 8 Days
arrow_backTo the overviewVolcanoes Up Close - with Leading Expert
One of Iceland’s most exciting attractions is its active volcanoes. They both intimidate and captivate at the same time. On this tour, you will gain in-depth knowledge about Icelandic volcanoes and geology, as we travel with one of the foremost experts in the field, Rikke Pedersen. She is the head of the Nordic Volcanological Center and has lived in Iceland for more than 25 years. She wrote her PhD on Eyjafjallajökull, which we will get very close to, and in 2010 she published the acclaimed book Eyjafjallajökull, the Volcano that Paralyzed Europe.
Rikke will join us for two full days. Throughout the tour, we are also accompanied by K. Torben Rasmussen, author of Turen går til Island and Nature Guide Iceland tour leader.
You will experience Iceland’s incredibly varied nature. In addition to snow-covered volcanoes, spouting geysers, and wild waterfalls, we will explore the south’s extensive agricultural areas. There is time for walks along the rolling waves of the Atlantic, with birds for company. We visit Vestmannaeyjar, where the violent volcanic eruption of 1973 destroyed large parts of the town. Several locations connected to perhaps the most famous of all Icelandic sagas, Njáls Saga, are included in the tour - it is recommended to read it beforehand.
Three nights are spent on an active farm, close to volcanoes and glaciers. This is an eight-day tour with relatively limited driving and high intensity, enriched by the expertise of the two very skilled tour leaders.
