Fly Fishing at the Arctic Circle in Greenland - 8 Days
arrow_backTo the overviewJoin us for a truly special fishing adventure in the West of Greenland, based at Camp Sassannguit, located 1.5-2 hours by boat from Sisimiut. The camp sits in the heart of the Greenlandic wilderness on the Arctic Circle and serves as the starting point for fishing in a remote river system offering roughly 15 kilometres of clear, fast-flowing water inhabited by strong, sea-run Arctic char. Group sizes are small, ensuring plenty of space along the river throughout the week.
Your guide and host is the Greenlandic fisherman and hunter Leif Fontaine, whose family has used the area for generations as a hunting and fishing ground. He knows the river, fjord and mountains intimately and will make sure you experience the most exciting stretches. In addition to fly fishing for Arctic char, there are opportunities for sea fishing from the boat for species such as wolffish, halibut, salmon and cod, and when weather and conditions allow, traditional methods like longlining can also be used.
You will stay simply yet comfortably in a tent with a bed and room for luggage, or in one of the cabins in the camp, which also offers toilet and shower facilities. Meals are enjoyed in the communal cabin, and throughout the week you will gain insight into Greenlandic hunting and fishing traditions as the catch is prepared and processed. The area around the camp also offers excellent hiking opportunities, where you may encounter open mountain landscapes, reindeer, musk oxen and rich birdlife – all part of everyday life in this part of West Greenland.
Departures are in July and August. If you travel in August and weather permits, there is a possibility to experience reindeer hunting with the guide. You will witness the hunt, learn how the animal is field-dressed, and help carry it back to the camp.
